Anthony Delgado

Twenty-two years ago, I became Homeless. After a week of drinking and doing drugs, a family member became upset, told me to leave his house, and drove me to Doraville’s train station. I went downtown to  Woodruff Park and stayed there for three to four weeks. Next, I went to Peach & Pine Street Shelter and Salvation Center and temporarily lived at both locations. I hung out and did drugs and alcohol. One cold day, I was sitting in Downtown Atlanta’s Greyhound Bus Terminal, watching TV. An old couple around 70 approached me, and the husband looked at me intensely.

He asked me, “Young man, are you a Veteran.” I said, “What business is it of yours?” Next, he said I should go to the VA hospital, and they would help me. His wife nodded her head in agreement. They were a pleasant couple. They had smiles on their faces. They were very nice to me. Next, I got up and looked outside to try to find them. I could not find them. I asked several people about them, and everyone said they never saw them. When I told my story a year later, Pastor Bolton said, “Anthony, be careful how you entertain strangers. Some have entertained angels unaware.” Nevertheless, they encouraged me to go to VA Hospital and get help.

At the VA Hospital, I met a Drug and Substance Abuse Counselor. The counselor encouraged me, and I had to stay on the 5th floor at the VA Hospital. I went through three days of a difficult detoxifying process. It was very rough.

From the VA, I attended Grace Recovery Program. I was enrolled in the program for 1.5 years. My life begins to change. Next, I met Pastor Bolton, who introduced me to Jesus Christ. I accepted him as my Lord and Savior. I was baptized in Jesus’ Name and filled with his Holy Spirit. My family and others begin to see my change. I began to become a focus on the goal of helping others. Next, I was employed by MCI. I held Quality and Sales positions. However, at MCI, I met a good friend named Quan. Quan played an inspirational and motivational part in my feeding people experiencing homelessness in the inter-city of Atlanta, Georgia.

One day, Pastor Bolton and I were having dinner at a local bread company. During the closing, I noticed the manager throwing away lots of bread. I said to him, “Why are you throwing away this bread? I want to take and give it away to my church and the homeless.” Since then, local Supermarkets, food chains, and coffee shops have donated and contributed to My Brother Keepers Organizations.

My Brother Keepers organization began in 2006 under the encouragement of my friend Quan.  Quan encouraged me to take food to the streets of downtown Atlanta. At first, I hesitated because I had lived on those streets and knew how people suffered. After a bit of reflection, I felt compelled to feed everyone hungry.

Quan became my business partner, and we established and incorporated the My Brother Keepers organization in 2006 in Georgia. The organization received its 501c3 legal status in 2010 as a Non-Profit, Charitable organization to serve people experiencing homelessness, individuals, families, and those in need. We are to say that we started our licensed GED program in 2010 Thanks to our many volunteer private and local businesses’ financial contributions, food, clothing, and vehicle donations. Our company operates without any local, state, or federal funding.

In conclusion, living on the streets, in the parks, in bus terminals, and in other places taught me survival, adaptability, flexibility, and tenacity skills. I believe that I am where God has called me to be concerned and love for those who hurt and suffer. I am dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness, families, and children who experienced a lack of shelter, food, clothing, and employment. I’ve been called to make a difference in the Atlanta area and the less fortunate.
